Recently,
I interview Sheila Clover English, CEO of Circle of Seven Productions about how to make a great book trailer. One thing English mentioned was the struggle to not only maintain great trailers, but evolve them so they do not become boring to today's every-changing visual society. I was thinking about this Monday night, wondering how trailers could become more hip and appealing to techno-savvy audiences.
My thoughts were put into form when I saw the trailer for Jason Starr's The Follower, now out in mass market paperback from St. Martin's. I read the book and loved it. The trailer does a great job of highlighting the stalker story without giving anything away. The creator uses the covers from both the first release and the new paperback, as well as live video – actors recreating scenes from the book. And while the fickle reader in me didn't exactly think the actors fit the roles, I though the use of active video – rather than passive photographs – gave the trailer a thrilling feel. For the first time, I didn't notice the length of the video. It is over two minutes long, and usually after 30 seconds I'm ready to search for something else.
