After doing an earlier post today featuring a story about why book signings are bad, I came across this Top 10 list to make book signings a success from the Writer's Relief Blog. Check it out:

And my tip is to either have a friend be a "greeter" at the front door and hand out your bookmarks while advising customers that there's an author signing books in the store. If you have no one else to be your greeter, ask to be placed near the door so you can do your own greeting.
I also bring order forms for my other books that aren't being featured at the event that day. I tuck one into each signed book just in case.
