Google Settlement Nears Deadline

Next week is the deadline to file objections or comments to the Google Book Search Settlement.

Libraries and the Open Books Alliance are increasing efforts to alter and oppose the settlement. Amazon, Yahoo and Microsoft are also objecting to the settlement.

As I've mentioned before, Google is turning into the next Microsoft, a giant entity that wants total control over your Web experience. (Ironic that Microsoft is in on the objections.) This type of monopoly will seriously hurt the publishing industry, and could easily carry Google over into other areas of your life.

Anytime a company wants a monopoly, it is bad news for everyone, and sets a precedent for the future. Google has a terrific idea, but the implementation and the lack of concern for author rights continues to haunt me.
