I will definitely let you know when I get on Second Life. Next time I'm at a hotel with high speed, I will make it a point to sign up and check it out.

Thanks for dropping by Market My Novel!

Hi Angela,
I live in the Midwest and know exactly what you mean about the "overlooked rural" country when it comes to technology. Fortunately, I live close enough to a large metro area to have DSL. But there are plenty of writers who don't.

As for genres in Second Life -- sci-fi, fantasy, romance, thrillers, and mystery are all well-represented, as is literary fiction and poetry, though I think the nature of SL as a virtual world probably has attracted more sci-fi/fantasy fans -- at least as the early adopters. Still, the audience is growing ever-larger and more varied.

If you ever get high-speed Internet and want to check out Second Life, let me know!

Thanks!

What excellent advice! I paid $600 for a syndicated press release that resulted in few sales. I've done better with radio programs which I got free simply by emailing the producer.

That is wonderful!

I love the idea of Second Life and would use it - IF I had access to DSL or higher. I live in the overlooked rural Midwest, where high speed Internet is a pipe dream. SKYPE isn't even much of an option here, which is incredibly frustrating. I'm not sure how many authors run into this issue, but when I write these pieces, I tend to err on the side of lower speed net options.

Keep us posted on your Second Life appearances! Is there a particular genre that sells better to audiences there?

Excellent post, Angela! I also loved your post on virtual book tours. Authors have so many opportunities now to market their work at little or no cost.

One option to add to a virtual book tour is an appearance in Second Life. I've hosted a number of authors who do a reading and/or Q&A session in this virtual world, and they've all responded favorably -- AND had sales as a result.

If you're new to author appearances in Second Life, I have a post about it on my blog: http://www.writersinthevirtualsky.com/the-new-way-for-authors-to-meet-readers-promote-books-virtual-book-tours/

I'm so glad I found your blog!
