I can definitely see that working in your genre. I can also see that working for other authors in just about any genre (well, except political commentary, of course!). I think what frustrates me is how many authors have told me that negative comments beat them down so badly that they don't bother anymore. That is NOT right. Gets my hackles up. =0)

Thanks for reading! You always share terrific thoughts.

I don't mind when other artists or writers air their opinions about politics or religion or whatever; to each their own, and what they choose to do on their own time is their business. It isn't always a big deal, and sometimes making a strong political stance can help spur interest in one's artwork or writing. The level of appropriateness depends on the genre, I think.

However, with the way I approach my job as a children's book illustrator, this won't do for me. I hardly think I'm censoring myself, though, just keeping my personal choices private. Moreover, folks don't hire me for my opinions on polarizing subjects. They want me to paint a cute fuzzy animal or a happy family scene - why would they care about my feelings about healthcare reform, prayer in schools, etc.? In return, I want them to give me proper and thorough art direction, promotional help, and basically do their job as my editor when we're on the clock.

As far as regretting responses to folks who get me riled up, I guess that really doesn't happen for me anymore. At most, I use the "hide user" feature on Facebook.
